On My Desk: E-Design Dining Room

So I thought I'd pop in for a few minutes to share the progress a dining room E-Design that I'm currently working on. I'm doing my best to get the design direction established before I leave for BlogFest in New York on Sunday.

Keep in mind that this design is still in the very early stages. I haven't even gotten to fabrics yet and this room needs some pattern!

When I start a new design, I begin by grabbing a ton of images from many different sources and then I edit until the feel of the room starts to reveal itself. Typically I'll wind up keeping just a few key pieces from the dozens I've collected. Then the search is on as I locate the rest of the elements that work with the key pieces and complete the design.

As far as this dining room design goes, I'm at the point now where I'm starting to get an idea of what it needs to look like and have started to remove some of the excess.

Sometimes this process goes quickly and can take just a day (if I'm not pulled in other directions) but usually it happens over the course of a week or two. I actually prefer if this stage takes longer because it gives me time to think about the room, search for unique pieces and really let things marinate.

There's certainly something to be said for letting the design of a room evolve over a period of time, rather than hurriedly slapping something together. I think it makes for a more curated and interesting look. Plus, if you're paying someone to design your home wouldn't you want them to spend more time on the design and searching for one-of-a-kind pieces just for you? Yes, yes you do. :)

It'll be interesting to see how many of the pieces here will end up in the final design. For now, I'm kind of loving the upholstered host chairs, the peacock mirror and the metallic wallpaper. I looooove metallic wallpaper in a dining room! It's romantic, reflective and adds a touch of formality.

Stay tuned to see how this dining room shapes up!
